Facebook & Instagram Ads for Giveaways

Meta ads are the engine behind almost every big car and truck giveaway. I've run Facebook and Instagram ads on 25+ giveaways, with full campaign ROAS from 2x to a 14x average. This page covers how I structure, track, create and scale giveaway ads, and the mistakes that quietly kill results.

Why giveaway ads are different

A normal ecommerce brand sells the product. A giveaway sells a chance at a dream, with merch as the entry. That changes everything about the ads:

  • The timeline is fixed. There's a hard end date, so you can't take three months to find winners.
  • Revenue spikes at deadlines. Budget and creative have to be planned around those days.
  • Creative fatigues fast. The same audience sees the same prize over and over, so you need a steady pipeline of new angles.
  • Creator trust drives conversion. Partnership ads from the creator's handle usually beat brand page ads.

Campaign structure

Keep it consolidated. Fewer campaigns with more budget let Meta's delivery system learn faster. I typically run a testing structure for new creative, a scaling structure for proven ads, and retargeting for site visitors and engagers heading into deadlines. Optimization is set on purchase, not on cheaper events like add to cart, because that's what pays for the car.

Creative that sells entries

On Meta today, creative is the targeting. The ad itself finds the buyer. Angles that work for giveaways:

  • Creator walkarounds and "this could be yours" talking heads
  • Key handoff and past winner moments (real ones only)
  • Build and mod content that shows what the prize actually is
  • Merch focused ads that lead with the product people get today
  • Deadline countdowns with a real end date

Test hooks hard. Kill losers fast. Scale winners until they fatigue, then replace them.

Tracking that the algorithm can trust

Meta Pixel plus Conversions API, deduplicated, with purchase value passing correctly. UTMs on every ad. If tracking is broken, Meta optimizes toward the wrong people and the campaign looks like it's "just not working." When performance drops, there's almost always a cause in the account. Facebook isn't just having a bad day.

Scaling without blowing up ROAS

Budgets go up when ROAS and margin hold, not because a day looked good. Expect ROAS to compress as you scale, since every next dollar reaches colder traffic. A 6x on heavy spend often makes more total profit than a 14x on a small budget, so judge the campaign on total return, not the ROAS number alone.

Meta's promotion rules

Meta allows promotions, but you're responsible for running them legally. The promotion needs official rules, eligibility and terms, plus a release acknowledging Meta isn't sponsoring or running it. You can't require people to share on their timeline or tag friends to enter. Ads also go through normal review, so avoid wording that reads like gambling or guaranteed wins. Pair that with US sweepstakes basics like a free entry method and NY and FL registration above $5,000 in prizes, and have an attorney check your rules.

Common reasons giveaway ads underperform

  • Pixel or CAPI not passing purchases correctly
  • Landing page doesn't match the ad
  • Slow mobile checkout
  • Low AOV from weak bundles
  • Too few new creatives, so fatigue hits by week two
  • Budget spread across too many ad sets

Frequently asked questions

Can you run Facebook ads for a giveaway?

Yes. Meta allows promotions if you follow its promotion guidelines, including official rules, eligibility terms and a release of Meta, and the ads pass normal ad review. US sweepstakes laws apply on top of that.

What's the best campaign objective for giveaway ads?

Sales, optimized on purchase. Optimizing for cheaper events like clicks or add to cart usually brings traffic that doesn't buy entries.

Why are my giveaway ads not converting?

The common causes are broken tracking, a landing page that doesn't match the ad, slow checkout, low AOV, creative fatigue and budget spread too thin. Most are fixable.

Should I use partnership ads for a giveaway?

Usually, yes. Ads running from the creator's handle tend to convert better because the audience already trusts that person.

What ROAS should I expect on giveaway ads?

Across 25+ campaigns, full giveaway ROAS has ranged from 2x to a 14x average. Higher spend campaigns often settle around 4x to 6x and still produce the most total profit.
